There’s something undeniably romantic about eloping — the spontaneity, the intimacy, the focus on what truly matters: your love and commitment to one another. And with summer just around the corner, now is the perfect time to plan a last-minute elopement that’s simple, beautiful, and deeply personal.
At Cherished Ceremonies, we understand that not every couple wants (or needs) a long engagement or a big wedding. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed by traditional wedding planning or simply want a meaningful moment between the two of you, eloping can offer the freedom and authenticity you’re craving.
If you’re considering a last-minute summer elopement in British Columbia, here’s everything you need to know to make it seamless, memorable, and truly yours.
1. Embrace the Why
First, get clear on your “why.” Are you eloping to simplify the process? To avoid family pressure? To create a moment just for the two of you? Maybe it’s all of the above—and that’s perfectly okay.
Eloping doesn’t mean sacrificing meaning. In fact, many couples find that without the distractions of a large wedding, the ceremony becomes more intentional, emotional, and profound. At Cherished Ceremonies, we specialize in creating heartfelt, personalized ceremonies that reflect your values and relationship, no matter how small or spontaneous the event may be.
2. Find the Right Officiant (and Fast!)
Even if your timeline is short, you don’t have to compromise on finding someone who aligns with your vision and values. A celebrant-led ceremony gives you the flexibility to incorporate personal vows, symbolic rituals, and a structure that feels right for you—without the constraints of a religious or registry office wedding.
We still have select summer dates available, and we love working with couples on shorter timelines. Quick doesn’t mean rushed. With a bit of communication and creativity, we can craft something beautiful in days, not months. Contact us today and let’s discuss.
3. Pick a Meaningful Location
One of the best parts of eloping is that the where is entirely up to you. British Columbia is full of stunning, serene spots perfect for elopements:
A quiet beach at sunrise in Penticton
A forest clearing near Lavington
A vineyard in West Kelowna
A scenic bluff overlooking Kalamalka Lake
Even your own backyard can become a sacred space with the right intention and setup. Think about places that hold meaning for you as a couple—or ask us for ideas! We’ve officiated ceremonies in all sorts of gorgeous (and unexpected) locations.
4. Keep the Paperwork in Check
Even last-minute weddings need a little paperwork. In B.C., you’ll need a valid marriage licence, which you can obtain from any Marriage Licence Issuer. The licence is valid for 90 days and costs $100. You’ll also need two witnesses (over 19 years old), so if you’re eloping just the two of you, consider inviting a friend or family member—or we can help you arrange witnesses if needed.
Pro tip: bring photo ID and allow some time for processing when you go to pick up your licence.
5. Focus on What Matters Most
With a last-minute elopement, you don’t have to worry about centrepieces, seating charts, or timelines. That leaves more room for what really matters—your vows, your connection, and the moment you say “I do.”
At Cherished Ceremonies, we help couples centre their elopement around intention and meaning. Want to include a handfasting ritual? Read a poem that moved you both? Pause for a quiet moment of reflection? We’ll make space for it.
You deserve a ceremony that feels sacred, even if it’s short and sweet.
6. Capture the Moment
Just because you’re eloping doesn’t mean you should skip the photos! Hiring a photographer for an hour or two can preserve the memories of this big little moment forever. Elopement photography is typically more relaxed and creative—and since the day is just about you, there’s no pressure to perform for the camera.
We’re happy to recommend photographers who understand the spirit of elopements and who know how to work with natural light and BC’s beautiful backdrops.
7. Celebrate in Your Own Way
After the ceremony, you get to decide what happens next. A quiet dinner for two at your favourite restaurant? A weekend getaway to a cabin or coastal lodge? An intimate celebration with close friends later on?
There’s no script, and that’s the beauty of it.
Some couples choose to host a larger gathering months later, while others keep the moment entirely private. However you choose to honour your union, we’ll support you in making it meaningful.
Final Thoughts
Eloping isn’t about cutting corners—it’s about cutting out everything that doesn’t feel like you. And with the warm weather, long days, and breathtaking landscapes of summer in BC, it’s the perfect time to say yes to a ceremony that’s simple, heartfelt, and wholly your own.
If your hearts are ready, we’re ready too. Let’s create a cherished ceremony together.
