From Dublin to the Okanagan: Alix & Emmett’s Love Story

Some love stories begin close to home. Others cross countries, continents and oceans before arriving at the moment when two people stand together and promise to spend their lives with one another.

For Alix and Emmett, that journey began thousands of kilometres from the Okanagan in Dublin, Ireland, where a Canadian girl and an American guy happened to cross paths during their first year of medical school.

What began with a somewhat unlikely introduction gradually became a friendship filled with coffees, hikes, mountain adventures and time spent together. Then came an unexpected Irish rainstorm — and one wonderfully imperfect moment that changed everything.

Years later, their story would bring them to the spectacular surroundings of Predator Ridge, where Cherished Ceremonies’ Owner and Head Officiant, Deirdre McCarvill, had the privilege of officiating their wedding in front of family and friends who had travelled from around the world to celebrate with them.

An Unexpected Meeting in Dublin

Alix and Emmett were both beginning medical school in Dublin when Alix’s flatmate, Cole, introduced them. Cole and Emmett had become running buddies, which eventually put Emmett in the right place at the right time to meet someone he had actually already noticed around campus.

For Emmett, suddenly finding himself standing beside the beautiful woman who had previously caught his eye was an unexpected stroke of luck.

Alix may not have viewed the encounter in quite the same way. As the story goes, she wasn’t exactly thrilled about being left at a bar with some American guy she barely knew.

Fortunately, first impressions rarely tell the whole story.

Along with a group of mutual friends, Alix and Emmett ended up shutting down the bar before moving on to another pub, where the evening continued with dancing into the early hours of the morning. By the time everyone finally called it a night, a connection had begun to form — even if Emmett may have recognized it a little sooner than Alix did.

There was certainly something about her that stayed with him long after the evening ended.

A Friendship Begins to Change

In the weeks and months that followed, Emmett found plenty of reasons for the two of them to spend more time together. There were invitations for coffee, hikes and trips to the mountains, and their friendship gradually became an increasingly important part of their lives in Dublin.

Running was already a passion for Emmett, so Alix found a resourceful way to join him without necessarily becoming a runner herself. She simply hopped on her bicycle and rode alongside him.

It became another experience they could share and another opportunity to spend time together, although they were still, at least officially, just friends.

Relationships are often shaped as much by these seemingly ordinary experiences as they are by life’s major milestones. A conversation, an adventure or an unexpected moment can take on an entirely different significance when viewed through the lens of everything that follows.

For Alix and Emmett, one of those defining moments arrived courtesy of the famously unpredictable Irish weather.

The Rainstorm That Changed Everything

The day had begun beneath blue skies, but the weather quickly changed and Alix and Emmett suddenly found themselves caught in a torrential downpour.

Unfortunately for Alix, her mascara was not nearly as prepared for the rain as she might have hoped.

As water poured down and mascara began streaming across her cheeks, she gave Emmett one very clear instruction: he wasn’t allowed to look at her.

Naturally, he did.

What he saw made him burst out laughing — not at Alix, but at the sheer absurdity of the situation they suddenly found themselves sharing.

It was spontaneous, funny and completely imperfect, and neither of them could possibly have known just how important that moment would become. Yet somehow, standing together in the pouring rain with Alix completely soaked and mascara running down her face, something shifted between them.

The friendship that had been growing between them had become something more.

Years after meeting in Dublin, Alix and Emmett gathered with family and friends at Predator Ridge to begin the next chapter of their story.

From Dublin to Predator Ridge

Years after that first evening in Dublin and the rainstorm that helped change the course of their relationship, Alix and Emmett’s journey brought them to the rolling hills and expansive views of Predator Ridge for their wedding.

It was a remarkable setting for an equally remarkable gathering. Approximately 95% of their guests had travelled from around the world to be there, bringing together people from the many places and chapters that had become part of Alix and Emmett’s lives.

For Deirdre, who had spent time getting to know the couple while developing their ceremony, it wasn’t difficult to understand why so many people had travelled such great distances. Their warmth, humour and genuine affection for one another were apparent from the beginning.

Against the backdrop of the Okanagan landscape, Deirdre officiated their marriage and helped transform the stories and experiences that had shaped their relationship into a ceremony that was unmistakably their own.

Turning a Love Story Into a Wedding Ceremony

This is where Alix and Emmett’s wedding so beautifully reflects the philosophy behind Cherished Ceremonies.

Deirdre is not only an experienced wedding officiant but also a Certified Master Life Cycle Celebrant, with specialized training in ceremony writing, public speaking and weaving personal narratives and histories into meaningful ceremonies. For Cherished Ceremonies, the process begins by getting to know each couple as individuals and as partners, understanding what marriage means to them, the promises they want to make and how they hope their guests will feel during the ceremony.

Alix and Emmett’s story offered so many wonderful details from which to draw.

Their unlikely introduction in Dublin wasn’t simply the place where their relationship began. The coffees, hikes, mountain adventures and bicycle rides revealed how their friendship developed, while the mascara-filled rainstorm captured something wonderfully human about the moment their relationship began to change.

When those memories become part of a wedding ceremony, guests are invited to experience more than the formalities of a marriage. They are reminded why these two particular people have chosen one another and given a glimpse into the journey that brought everyone together for that day.

Personal stories and plenty of laughter helped make Alix and Emmett’s ceremony a genuine reflection of their relationship.

A Ceremony Filled With Meaning — and Laughter

The photographs from Alix and Emmett’s wedding capture the atmosphere beautifully. There are moments of tenderness and reflection, but there is also an unmistakable sense of joy and plenty of genuine laughter.

That balance matters.

A meaningful wedding ceremony does not need to be solemn from beginning to end. It can honour the significance of the commitment being made while still leaving room for humour, personality and the stories that make a relationship unique.

Cherished Ceremonies was created around that very idea. Deirdre’s approach is to craft ceremonies that are deeply personalized and reflective of each couple’s relationship, rather than simply moving them through a standard script. The goal is for couples to feel heard and represented in their ceremony and for the people closest to them to recognize the relationship being celebrated.

For Alix and Emmett, that meant a ceremony that could move naturally between the significance of the promises they were making and the wonderfully imperfect moments that had brought them there.

Even running mascara deserved its place in the story.

Celebrating Everything That Brought Them There

Standing together at Predator Ridge, surrounded by people who had travelled from around the world, Alix and Emmett had come a very long way from two first-year medical students meeting unexpectedly in a Dublin bar.

Their journey wasn’t defined by one grand romantic gesture. It developed through the accumulation of experiences that gradually brought two people closer together: evenings with friends, coffee dates, hikes, mountain adventures, runs accompanied by bicycle rides and countless ordinary moments that became meaningful because they were shared.

Then there was one extraordinary downpour that neither would forget.

Their wedding ceremony provided an opportunity not only to celebrate the commitment Alix and Emmett were making that day, but also to honour the story that had made that commitment possible.

For Deirdre and Cherished Ceremonies, being entrusted with those stories — and then having the privilege of weaving them into one of the most important moments in a couple’s life — is at the heart of what being a wedding officiant and Life Cycle Celebrant is all about.

Congratulations to Alix and Emmett on a beautiful wedding and an extraordinary journey from Dublin to the Okanagan. May the years ahead bring many more adventures, plenty of reasons to laugh together and, when the weather requires it, perhaps a little waterproof mascara.

Your Love Story Deserves to Be Part of Your Ceremony

Every couple arrives at their wedding day with a story that belongs only to them.

At Cherished Ceremonies, those stories matter. Deirdre takes the time to understand each couple, their relationship, their values and the experiences that brought them together, then uses that understanding to help create a wedding ceremony that feels personal, meaningful and authentic. It reflects Cherished Ceremonies’ broader philosophy that the ceremony should be a genuine extension of the couple and their relationship.

If you’re planning a wedding in the Okanagan and want a ceremony that celebrates not only that you’re getting married, but the story of how you got there, Cherished Ceremonies would love to hear from you.
